Frequently Asked Questions
Why can't I get my shower grout clean with store bought cleaners?
Usually the grout used in tubs and showers is unsanded. This type of grout is not as porous as the sanded grout used for floors and that is why it is used in areas where there is high water concentration like tubs and showers. Over time, unsanded grout will absorb stains and allow the mold to grow. Once these stains and mold get into the grout, they become locked in and are very difficult, if not impossible, to remove with cleaners. The old grout must be removed and replaced with mold resistant grout. The grout is then sealed with a top quality sealer.
Can you regrout wall and floor tiles?
Yes, unless the tiles are very small or have irregular edges. Usually we cannot regrout tiles less than 4" X 4" as it would be very labour intensive.
Can you apply grout over top of existing grout?
No. The new grout must have a clean surface to adhere to and there needs to be at least 1/8" of depth.
Does your grout renewal process create a lot of dust?
No. We use a dust collection vacuum in conjunction with the grout removal tool which collects about 95% of the dust.
How do I know if there is water damage or mold behind the tiles in my shower?
When we come to your house to give you a quote, we will run a test to determine if there is water damage. If there is water damage the chances of mold growing behind the tiles is high. We will always recommend that the shower be rebuilt in this situation as mold can cause health problems in certain people. We do not rebuild showers or tubs but we can recommend reputable contractors to you that will do this work.
How long does it take to regrout my tub or shower?
The regrouting takes about a day and a half. The tub or shower can be used the day after we complete the work.
Do you offer colour sealing?
We have searched the market and have finally found a colour sealer that we feel looks natural and wears well. We also have a top quality clear sealer that leaves your grout looking totally natural and will last 15 years with the use of mild cleaning products.
Some companies claim that with their coloured sealers, the grout will never get dirty. Is this true?
All grout that is sealed with either a coloured or clear sealer will eventually show some dirt but the dirt will only be on the surface. The purpose of the sealer is to prevent the dirt from being absorbed into the grout. The surface dirt will be very easy to remove.
Retiling vs regrouting? How do you decide?
If you like the look of the tile, and there is no water damage to the wallboard behind the tile, then regrouting is the way to go. Retiling a tub or shower will usually run four to five times the cost of regrouting.
What about these liners that can be put over the existing tile?
There are some companies that have a very good product but it is very expensive, usually running five to six times the cost of regrouting. Keep in mind that you may also be covering up problems such as water and mold damage if you choose to go with a liner.
